Interpretive Haiku Booklet
Spring 2026
Objective:
Find a haiku poem and convert each line into a 6-page spread interpreting its meaning. Use visual elements, type, and value to illustrate the author's intention for the words.
Haiku Poem:
Aura of angels
Venus sews seeds of sunrise
Old as yesterday
Sketches
For my sketches, I focused on how I wanted to position the type and how to incorporate visual elements with it. The main challenge was how to convert words into a graphic design.
Iterations & Process
On each page, I tried different ways to organize the type to communicate the author's intent in the haiku effectively.
Final
From my research, I learned that the purpose of this haiku was to express nature's beauty as the world changes from nighttime to dawn. I tried to illustrate this by showing changes in value, representing a sunrise. This project was a great way to combine my knowledge of typographic elements with aesthetics.
