Creature Mark & Form Analysis Interpretive Phrase

Objective:
Create a design that effectively communicates the physical qualities of the creature and its characteristics by using graphic and typographic elements.
Part One: Creature Mark
Research
Koalas are known to be nocturnal and can sleep for over 20 hours. They are commonly found climbing trees and eating eucalyptus leaves. The main traits I wanted to communicate through my creature mark were the koala's climbing abilities, its fur coat, and its sleepy nature.
Sketches
My sketches were done to capture the koala's basic features and characteristics. Starting with basic shapes and outlines gave me an idea of how I wanted the koala to look in the end.
Creature Mark Iterations
One challenge I experienced while making my iterations was showing a contrast in value with the koala, despite it mostly being all one color. As I progressed, I made my designs simpler and relied more on negative white space. By adding less detail to the face and body, the white space was more effective.
Final Creature Mark
My final design successfully captures the koala's basic shape and character through its position and features. The detail of the claws and tree branches demonstrates the koala in its natural habitat and its ability to climb.
Part Two:
Form Analysis Interpretive Phrase
Original Phrase:
The fuzzy and sleepy koala sits on the branch.
Form Analysis Iterations
Many of these iterations only feature part of the phrase "The fuzzy and sleepy koala". I realized after iterating that the phrase needed to be longer so that I could have more elements to explore. Playing around with the typography of the design was very challenging due to spacing and keeping the creature mark in the viewers' focus.
Typeface Studies
Final Form Analysis
My final design combines Bodoni Moda and Helvetica typefaces to showcase the attributes of the koala creature mark. Using a very simple phrase to describe the koala draws the viewer's focus to it.
